President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja with a directive that they should rise up to the nation’s current security challenges. The Coalition of Concerned Nigeria Security Experts (CCNSE) on Wednesday slammed the service chiefs for choosing to operate from Abuja, asking them to relocate to the Northeast, the epicentre of insecurity in Nigeria. The coalition expressed concern that two months after the security chiefs assumed office, insecurity was getting worse. Troops of Operation Thunder Strike (OPTS) have killed two suspected bandits and destroyed many bandits’ camps in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kaduna. “Troops under the auspices of Operation Thunder Strike (OPTS) and 1 Division Nigerian Army,  have neutralised two bandits in the Buruku general area of Chikun LGA.” Aruwan also said, several bandits escaped with life threatening injuries during the ongoing operations against  bandits covering five local government areas of Kaduna Central Senatorial District. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N82 billion for the completion of infrastructure projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Rehabilitation of the Federal Secretariat, Abuja is also included in the project. The Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammed Bello, made the announcement while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the council meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday. Bello said that about N8.1 billion of the amount was approved for the rehabilitation of the Federal Secretariat. “I presented six memos and all have to do with infrastructure and infrastructure-related projects. “The first one is for the revision of the contracts for the rehabilitation and expansion of the outer Southern Expressway to Ring Road I in the Federal Capital City. “That contract was approved at a varied contract amount of N15, 125, 122, 967. The two Nigerians, who claimed to be cousins, were identified as Imran Kabir, 24, and Jamilu Sani, 25 years of age. They were arrested by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel after a hot chase. “Both wanted to go to Pakistan for pursuing Islamic studies. Sani had a Nigerian passport, while Kabir didn’t. We recovered five printouts taken from Google maps of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq. They described Iraq as their final destination,”  a BSF spokesperson said. The duo got to the checkpost at about 5.50am in a stolen swift dzire taxi. The BSF said they had hired the taxi from Delhi and made off with it on reaching Amritsar when the driver, with whom they had a tiff on Thursday night over the fare, was asleep. Emanuel adebayor   A Togolese footballer who plays for English club Tottenham Hotspur and the Togo national team  has recently converted to Islam  in a ceremony recorded and a video was posted to YouTube. Apparently, until recently Adebayor was a practising Christian. He used to post pictures of himself with a priest to Facebook with captions praising God. The footballer, however, hasn’t made any public announcements about his conversion.

Heavy rain that lasted for more than seven hours has caused floods in parts of northern Nigeria's biggest city, Kano. Several places, including the city's famous Kurmi market and several bus and taxi parks were flooded. A court in Ethiopia has sentenced a group of Muslim leaders, activists and journalists to jail terms of up to 22 years under controversial anti-terrorism legislation. The 18 defendants were convicted last month of charges including terrorism and conspiracy to create an Islamic State. They were arrested three years ago during protests against alleged official interference in religious affairs. They denied the charges and complained of mistreatment during detention.
